Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Steel is the latest entrant in the rush to get telecom licences for starting operations in the rapidly growing sector, while IT firm Tulip is also understood to be mulling a foray.
Sources said JSW, which has interests primarily in steel and power projects, plans to start telecom services across the country and will seek licences for all the telecom circles.
Tulip, a data telecom service and IT solutions provider, is also understood to be considering the idea, sources said.
However, company officials could not be immediately contacted to confirm the plans.
The two companies follow a host of other companies from varied sectors, particularly real estate, to apply for licence by the October 1 deadline of the Department of Telecom.
Other companies which have recently announced plans or are mulling such a venture include consumer durables major Videocon, real estate firms DLF, Unitech, Indiabulls Real Estate, Parsvnath, Omaxe; and diversified group Hinduja.
More than 160 applications are already pending with DoT for permission to operate in the world's fastest growing telecom market which is adding over seven million users every month. The DoT has said it will not accept licence applications after October 1 and will form new norms to screen applicants in view of the spectrum shortage.
