Sterlite Optical Technologies, an integrated manufacturer of optical fibres for the telecom sector, has been awarded a Rs 143 crore contract by state-run telecom giant Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL), for supplying copper telecom cables.
"The company has received a contract from BSNL for manufacture and supply of 20 to 2000 pair Copper Telecom Cables. These cables would be used to enhance BSNL's Pan-India network to provide basic telephony and broadband services," the company said in a statement to th Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).
The supplies would be completed by March 2007. This would boost the company's market share for copper telecom cables in India in 2007-08 to 23%, the release added.
The copper cables are used for the last mile wiring for landline phones while fiber optic cables are used up to the junction box for providing broadband connectivity.
The company posted 37% rise in net profit to Rs 27.20 crore for the quarter-ended September 30, 2007 as against Rs 19.85 crore reported a year earlier. Total income went up 5.38% to Rs 400.59 crore during the same period.
The company's shares were up 4.3% on the BSE to Rs 313 in late morning trades.
