Jet Airways to add 20 more Boeing planes as traffic soars

JET Airways — India's largest airline by marketshare — will add 20 more Boeing 737-800 aircraft to its fleet to cash in on the surge in air traffic.

Orders have been placed with Boeing for the aircraft which will be delivered between October 2012 and December 2014, the company said in a notice to the Bombay stock exchange. The planes can be used on domestic as well as international flights to south-east Asia and the Middle East.

Jet has recently been granted approval to operate flights to various stations in the Middle East, excluding Dubai and Abu Dhabi. It already operates Boeing 737-800s from Mumbai and Delhi to Singapore. Speaking to ET, industry sources here said the airline had placed the order with an eye on future profitability.

Aircraft delivery slots are fully booked for the next few years, as manufacturers are facing a spurt in demand from all over the world. Latest International Air Transport Association (IATA) figures released last week, said global air-traffic growth is at a 16-month peak, at 8.6% in August. Growth in Indian air traffic has been much higher at roughly 35% last year.

The last of Jet Airways' ten Boeing 737 aircraft, ordered by the company earlier, is scheduled to be delivered on October 11, 2007. Company sources said there are no unused delivery positions for the planes available till October 2012. Most of the new B737 aircraft covered by this Purchase Agreement will be replacements for older owned and leased aircraft that will be phased out by the company in accordance to their term expiries during this period.
